A new year means a new beginning! Many New Year’s resolutions fall into the self-improvement category, but what about resolutions towards home improvement? It is the season to make goals for 2015, including for your home. Here are a few suggestions for the New Year because it is how you live that matters:
- Cut Energy Use – HouseLogic recommends starting with your HVAC duct work. According to the site, sealing and insulating your ductwork can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20%, saving you $200 per year or more, according to Energy Star. So make a resolution to check your HVAC.
- Make It Safe – While this includes making sure your smoke alarms are working and fire extinguishers are up to date, HGTV suggests also checking your home for Radon. This colorless, odorless gas can cause lung cancer, according to the U.S. EPA. It’s important to monitor for the gas as you would other potential hazards.
- Prepare A Disaster Kit – Assemble a household emergency kit for your family. Examples of what your kit should contain are: sufficient drinking water, first aid kit, and blanket for every family member; manual can opener, flashlight, and more. This is also a good time to check that your first aid kit is in order, and that your spare flashlight batteries are adequate/charged.
The New Year is the perfect time for a few home-related resolutions and to ensure your home is safe and prepared for the coming year.
