Memorial Day is this weekend and with it we can begin the summer season! We always love this long weekend because many of our communities’ pools open for the summer and you can smell delicious cookouts as you walk down the street. It’s fun to see neighbors laughing and eating together and enjoying the warm night air outside on decks and patios. Summer is a great time to get together with friends, family, and neighbors.
This weekend will feature lots of BBQs and laughs, but we shouldn’t forget the origins of this holiday. Memorial Day, which was known as Decoration Day for many years, can be traced back to the Civil War and a desire to honor our fallen soldiers. The day was first officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan and became a federal holiday by an act of Congress in 1971. It’s a time to remember and give thanks for all those who served in our nation’s Armed Forces. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have protected our freedom and served in the military. It’s also a time to thank all members of the Armed Forces for their service.
So as we all prepare for a fun Memorial Day weekend, let’s remember to take a moment to honor our service members. We are forever grateful for them!
