4 Ways to Keep the Heating Bill Down

Keep the Heating Bill DownEven though it’s been an abnormally warm Fall so far, the colder temperatures are approaching Virginia very quickly! As the temperature drops, too often our heating and energy bills rise. Implement these tips this Fall and upcoming Winter to keep the heating bill down and save energy:

  • Take Advantage of the Heat from the Sun: Open your curtains during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home, and close them at night to reduce the chill.
  • Maintain Your Heating System: Ensure that your heating system is up to date. Replace your furnace filter once a month or as needed.
  • Lower Your Water Heater Temperature: According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, water heating accounts for about 18% of the energy consumed in your home. By turning down the temperature of your water heater to a warm setting of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, you’ll save energy and money.
  • Adjust Your Thermostat When You Aren’t Home: Consider adjusting the thermostat when you’re asleep or out of the house. A programmable thermostat makes it easy for you to program your schedule. By turning your thermostat back three degrees for eight hours, you will save around 10 percent a year on your heating a cooling bills.

The good news is that new homes are normally more energy-efficient than older homes. In addition, the homes in each of our communities include Home Energy Rating Systems, tankless hot water heaters, house wraps, and more. We believe it’s how you live that matters, and providing our homeowners with the latest in energy-efficiency is an amenity that is guaranteed. Stay warm this season!
